Leaving Dogs in Cars

Leaving dogs in cars when it is warm of hot outside can be fatal, even if it is only for a short period of time. The temperature can double inside a car from that of outside in only 6-10minutes. Therefore dogs can suffer from heat exhaustion very quickly and even die.

If you happen to see a distressed dog in a car on a warm day then call the RSPCA on 0870 55 55 999 or the Police on 08452 777 444. They will be able to release the animal by breaking the window if necessary.

Another point to remember is that you should exercise dogs, especially older dogs, in the morning or late evening during hot weather to avoid heat exhaustion.

The dangers of leaving a dog in a car on a warm day

  • Cars can act live ovens in warm sunny weather and temperatures can soar to over 120°F/49°C. This is why it is recommended by the RSCPA that animals are never left inside vehicles.

  • An animal can suffer from heatstroke when it is panting for breath inside a car and this can kill the animal very quickly.

  • Leaving a bowl of water and a widow open slightly will not help.

  • You can face prosecution if you leave an animal inside a vehicle and put it at risk.

  • Help spread this message, it will save dogs lives and owners from prosecution.
